This app compliments the exhibition “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts,” presented by the American Folk Art Museum at the Park Avenue Armory, New York City, March 25–30, 2011. The app guides users through the installation of 650 red and white quilts, all of which are on loan from Joanna S. Rose’s collection of more than 1,000 American quilts, in the Park Avenue Armory’s historic 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall. The app includes images of each of these 650 bedcovers, as well as statements by collector Joanna S. Rose, guest curator Elizabeth V. Warren, and Maria Ann Conelli and Stacy C. Hollander of the American Folk Art Museum.

The app also features the installation floorplan and elevation renderings created by exhibition design firm Thinc Design, which help the on-site user locate individual quilts in the exhibition.

The Victoria Cross and George Cross are Britain and the Commonwealth’s highest military and civil decorations awarded for extreme acts of bravery.



Included in the app are stories such as Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, who risked his life in Afghanistan by throwing himself on a grenade to protect the lives of his comrades; Leading Seaman James Magennis, who undertook a series of dangerous dives from his submarine to place mines onto enemy ships; and Odette Sansom, an undercover agent in the Second World War who endured months of interrogation, torture and solitary confinement but revealed no information to her captors.



This app has been launched to accompany The Lord Ashcroft Gallery: Extraordinary Heroes at Imperial War Museum London - a major new exhibition showcasing the world’s largest collection of Victoria Cross and George Cross medals.

This app is a virtual tour of moiré, a new exhibition by the German artist Carsten Nicolai.

carsten nicolai: moiré is on view at The Pace Gallery — 534 West 25th Street from May 21 through June 25, 2010.

The word “moiré” refers to visual interference patterns, which are created when two or more layers of simple dot, line, or grid structures overlap, producing an additional pattern on top of the original layers. Often an unwanted side-effect in printing processes, Nicolai uses the moiré effect to emphasize its potential on both a scientific and artistic level.

Carsten Nicolai has been working at the intersection of art and science since the early 1990s, creating complex, interdisciplinary works which push the boundaries of human perception. This show explores the moiré effect in motion- and light-activated large-scale installations, sculptural works, and drawings. The exhibition precedes the release of the artist’s new book, moiré index, to be published by gestalten this August.

This app presents a virtual tour of Head From Buddha Foot, a sculpture in copper by the Chinese artist Zhang Huan. The artwork, which measures approximately 3 x 18 x 6 feet, is on view at the Sculpture Garden at 590 Madison in New York City from July 21 through October 15, 2010.

The app also serves as an introduction to Zhang Huan's work. It includes portraits and a bio of the artist, as well as information about several other recent Zhang Huan exhibitions, including his recent installation at Art Basel entitled Hero No. 1. Other highlights include Three Heads Six Arms, a monumental public sculpture installed across the street from San Francisco's city hall; and a video of Blessings, Zhang Huan's two-venue New York exhibition at The Pace Gallery in spring 2009.

This app is a virtual tour of The Nervous System (Inverted), an elaborate, hand-wrought rope machine by the young British sculptor Conrad Shawcross. The artwork, which is currently on view at the Sculpture Garden at 590 Madison Avenue, New York, hangs 50 feet above the ground and spans 25 feet in diameter. Once in motion, its constellations of colored spools revolve in orbit and begin to twine their threads.

This app documents the creation of the artwork with computer renderings and images of the installation process. Also included are images and video of the completed work; a portrait and bio of the artist, as well as videos of past works; and information about The Pace Gallery, which is sponsoring the exhibition and has created the app.
