　本小説は、長崎原爆遺族会の会長であった女性の被爆体験を中心に、彼女をとりまく少女たちのエピソードも含め、被爆から六十六年、現在もなお続く原爆との闘いを、浦上の歴史をたどりながら描いたドキュメント的な歴史小説です。

　被爆者たちが、戦後どのような境遇におかれ苦しめられてきたのか、その無知や無理解の要因をつくったアメリカの原爆被害を隠蔽する戦後政策、そして、それに追随した日本政府・・・被爆者に対する社会の偏見や差別に、どれだけ多くの被爆者たちが苦しめられてきたことだろうか。また、延々と続く放射線の後遺症に現在もなおどれだけ多くの人々が苦しみ続けていることだろうか。

　主人公の目を通して、偏見や差別意識を持つことの愚かさを訴えるとともに、悲惨な悲劇を生む核兵器を廃絶し、真の平和な国際社会を築くために何が必要であるのかを、世界の読者一人ひとりに問いかけるものです。第三のヒロシマ・ナガサキを決してつくらないために・・・
