«Идио́т» — пятый роман Фёдора Михайловича Достоевского, впервые опубликован с января 1868 по февраль 1869 в журнале «Русский вестник».

В центре сюжета — история молодого человека, князя Мышкина, представителя обедневшей дворянской фамилии. От рождения князь страдает умственной неполноценностью. После длительного пребывания в Швейцарии, где он проходит лечение у доктора Шнейдера, он возвращается в Россию. Князь излечился от душевной болезни, но предстает перед читателем, как человек искренний и невинный, хотя и прилично разбирающийся в отношениях между людьми. Он едет в Россию к единственным оставшимся у него родственникам — семье Епанчиных. В поезде он знакомится с молодым купцом Рогожиным и отставным чиновником Лебедевым, которым бесхитростно рассказывает свою историю. В ответ он узнает подробности жизни Рогожина, который влюблен в бывшую содержанку богатого дворянина Тоцкого Настасью Филипповну. В доме Епанчиных выясняется, что Настасья Филипповна известна и в этом доме. Есть план выдать ее за протеже генерала Епанчина, Ганю Иволгина, человека амбициозного, но посредственного.

Князь Мышкин знакомится со всеми основными персонажами повествования еще в первой части романа. Это — дочери Епанчиных, Александра, Аделаида и Аглая, на которых он производит благоприятное впечатление, оставаясь объектом их немного насмешливого внимания. Далее, это генеральша Епанчина, которая находится в постоянном волнении из-за того, что ее муж находится в некотором общении с Настасьей Филипповной, имеющей репутацию павшей. Потом, это Ганя Иволгин, который сильно страдает из-за предстоящей ему роли мужа Настасьи Филипповны, и не может решиться на развитие своих пока очень слабых отношений с Аглаей. Князь Мышкин довольно простодушно рассказывает генеральше и сестрам Епанчиным о том, что он узнал о Настасье Филипповне от Рогожина, а также, поражает публику своим повествованием о наблюдавшейся им заграницей смертной казни. Принимают решение, что пока князь, за неимением средств, будет жить в доме Иволгина. Там князь знакомится с Настасьей Филипповной, которая приезжает неожиданно в этот дом. После безобразной сцены с алкоголиком-отцом Иволгина, которого тот бесконечно стыдится, в дом Иволгиных приезжает за Настасьей Филипповной и Рогожин. Он приезжает с шумной компанией, которая собралась вокруг него совершенно случайно, как вокруг любого человека, умеющего сорить деньгами. В результате скандального объяснения Рогожин клянется Настасье Филипповне, что ввечеру предложит ей сто тысяч рублей наличными.

Этим вечером Мышкин очень хочет попасть в дом к Настасье Филипповне, и вначале надеется на старшего Иволгина, который обещает проводить Мышкина в этот дом, но, на самом деле, вовсе не знает, где она проживает. Отчаявшийся князь не знает, что делать, но ему неожиданно помогает младший брат-подросток Гани Иволгина, Коля, который показывает ему дорогу в дом Настасьи Филипповны. В тот вечер у нее именины, приглашенных гостей мало, появление князя приводит всех в изумление. Один из гостей, Фердыщенко, положительно тип мелкого негодяя, предлагает для развлечения сыграть в странную игру — каждый рассказывает про свой самый низкий поступок. Следуют рассказы самого Фердыщенко и Тоцкого. В комнаты внезапно вваливается Рогожин с компанией, принесшей обещанные сто тысяч.

Князь дает повод к изумлению, серьезно предлагая Настасье Филипповне выйти за него замуж, в то время, как она, в отчаянии, играет этим предложением и едва ли не соглашается. Настасья Филипповна предлагает Гане Иволгину взять сто тысяч, и бросает их в огонь камина, так, чтобы тот смог выхватить их совершенно целыми. Лебедев, Фердыщенко и подобные им в замешательстве, и умоляют Настасью Филипповну позволить им выхватить из огня эту пачку денег, но она непреклонна, и предлагает сделать это Иволгину. Иволгин сдерживается, и не бросается за деньгами. Настасья Филипповна щипцами вынимает почти целые деньги, отдает их Иволгину, и уезжает с Рогожиным.
