Watching a large and enthusiastic man and his family unload their gear from the car on a recent camping trip, we became more and more fascinated trying to guess what their plans might be.

They seemed to be a family on vacation at a fairly remote lake in the Rockies, but the longer we watched the less sure we were. We weren't at all sure they weren't on a practice run for a projected African safari.

The man and his wife, both strong looking, pulled and tugged until they finally had a tent spread on the ground. Three strapping children staggered under the weight of rolls that could be sleeping bags, somewhat disguised.

The heap on the ground grew with cartons of canned foods, assorted hardware, clothing, ropes, packs—we finally lost track. Long after dark we could still hear these intrepid campers trying to get their tent secured and their gear stowed away.

We left camp the next morning with four days' supplies on our backs and astonishment on the faces of our neighbors. They were as securely attached to their camp as if they had been nailed into position.

Repetitions of this scene have convinced us that there are many people who would like to know how to go light.

Some people, of course, want to set up a home away from home and relax without ever stirring, but many others, like our neighbors, just don't have any idea how to go light.

Of course it is foolish for any one to sleep exposed to rain or snow or to think that there is any benefit to be derived from being cold or uncomfortable.

The whole idea of open-air sleeping is to breathe pure, fresh air in place of the atmosphere of a house which, under the best conditions, is full of dust and germs.

If we become outdoor sleepers, coughs and colds will be almost unknown. General Sherman once wrote a letter in which he said that he did not have a case of cold in his entire army and he attributed it to the fact that his soldiers slept and lived in the open air.

In this book I have tried to make it possible for you to build a camp that is inexpensive and will meet the requirements of summer living. The book has been arranged so that you can select the cottage that appeals to you and then, by studying the more technical sections, be able to construct the shelter.

Another section of this book is devoted to cottages that are already built. Designs by some of this country's and Canada's best-known architects are included. You will find ideas in these designs that you may want to incorporate in your own cottage.

Nearly every locality is represented. You'll find camps near the ocean, lakes, and rivers. Some aren't near any body of water.

In the more technical sections on general construction, lighting, and plumbing, I have tried to select one easy way of doing the work. It is never the only way that it can be done.
