A little long-winded, but overall this is a pretty enjoyable, sometimes very creepy British murder mystery. Much of the action is centered around a spooky old house where a singer is forced to spend the night in order to claim her inheritance. Lots of suspicious characters are lurking about. The highlight of the film is Lehman, who turns in one of the best-ever performances as a sinister housekeeper. British singing star Matthew's last starring role. Plays like a horror film in places. A top-of-the-line women's prison film. A frightened girl is sent to prison and exposed to prison sub-culture. The inmates she befriends vary from dangerous dames to submissive ladies totally lost in prison life and stuck at the end of the inmate pecking order. Later, she leaves prison while her fellow inmates remain. However, she comes back to visit, only to set off a violent disruption. One intriguing plot device has a particular cell bathroom being used by inmates to see loved ones on the outside by holding up a mirror at a certain angle. Eddie Constantine is a tough sailor who's being flown back to the mainland for trial. Also on board is the sleazy snake who turned him in, played to the hilt by Richard Attenborough. The plane is filled with many colorful characters: stuffy socialites, sexy playgirls, etc. During the flight, a fire erupts, injuring the pilot. Eddie is forced to land the plane near a remote island. After a hard landing, the plane sinks and the survivors head for shore. There they discover--to their horror--a giant lead bunker with cameras inside pointing out to a small rocky point on which sits the tell-tale tower of an atom bomb test device. A sleazy evangelist puts the move on a small town shanty tramp. She then makes a move on a local black kid, which later gets him killed after her drunken pappy walks in on them (she cries rape!). The confrontation between her and her pappy (after he learns it wasn't really rape) is unforgettable. She soon goes crawling back to the sleazy evangelist. The acting is superb in its own crude way. Kind of an R-rated sleazy cross between Elmer Gantry and To Kill a Mockingbird. Holland, who plays the shanty tramp (her name isn't even listed in the credits) is an absolute knockout, a real bombshell with a perfect hour-glass figure. However, she's attractive in the sleaziest, most sexually provocative way, not someone you'd bring home for Sunday dinner, but the kind of whorish "dame" even the most conservative guy would get bug-eyed over.  This video was transferred from a 35mm print....more at www.eztakes.com. Farr turns in a great performance as a man whose sanity is saved when a spiritualist materializes his dead fiancee. This atmospheric chiller is complemented by a fine, literate script and all-around good performances.
