In 1979, backed by the support of its fans, The Yamaguchi Line (merely a local line at the time) put a steam locomotive to work on its route. Starting from Ogori (modern Shin-Yamaguchi) towards Tsuwano, the C571 Locomotive gSL Yamaguchih passed through some of the most scenic areas in Japan. It quickly became immensely popular and jump-started the country's steam locomotive revival. Today the Yamaguchi Line continues to operate two steam locomotives, the C57 and the C56.

Operating between Tokyo or Osaka and their neighboring cities, these trains dashed throughout the country each night under starry skies. The most famous Overnight Trains were the so called Blue Trains. The sight of the distant mountains, seas and cities from the comfort of the Blue Train was like something out of a dream.
