나이가 많은 유대인 신사가 젊은 여자와 결혼했고 두 사람은 서로 무척 사랑했다. 하지만 남편이 어떤 방법을 써도 여자는 오르가슴에 이르지 못했다. 유대교에서는 여성이 성적 쾌락을 누릴 자격이 있으므로, 두 사람은 랍비에게 해결책을 묻기로 했다. 랍비는 두 사람의 이야기를 가만히 듣더니 턱수염을 한번 쓰다듬고는 이렇게 제안했다.
"멋들어진 젊은 남자를 하나 고용하시게. 두 사람이 사랑을 나누는 동안 젊은 남자가 부인한테 수건을 흔들게 하시게. 그러면 부인이 상상의 나래를 펴면서 절정에 이를 수 있을 걸세.”
두 사람은 집으로 돌아가 랍비의 조언을 따랐다. 잘생긴 젊은 남자를 고용하여 두 사람이 사랑을 나누는 동안 그 위로 수건을 흔들도록 했다. 그런데도 도움이 되지 않는지 부인은 여전히 만족하지 못했다. 할 수 없이 두 사람은 다시 랍비에게 갔다.
랍비가 남편에게 말했다.
“좋아, 그러면 반대로 해보시게. 젊은 남자더러 부인과 사랑을 나누게 하고, 자네가 수건을 흔드는 걸세."
두 사람은 이번에도 랍비의 조언을 따랐다. 젊은이가 아내와 잠자리에 들고 남편이 수건을
흔들었다. 젊은이는 열성적으로 일에 몰입했고, 아내는 엄청난 소리를 지르며 오르가슴을 느꼈다. 남편이 웃으며 젊은이를 바라보더니 의기양양하게 말했다.
“이 사람아, 이제 알겠나. 수건은 이렇게 흔드는 거라고.”

한참을 웃게 만드는 황당한 개그다. 이 에피소드는 그냥 웃긴 개그로만 취급할 수도 있지만, 그 안에는 심오한 철학이 숨겨져 있다. 논리학의 일부인 ‘인과오류’를 보여주고 있다. 다시 말하면, 원인과 결과를 잘 못 연결한 것이다. 우리도 일상생활에서 이런 오류를 범하지 않을까? 하버드 대학에서 철학을 전공한 토머스 캐스카트와 대니얼 클라인은
이렇게 유머로 철학을 설명하고 있다. 철학이 이렇게 웃겨도 되는 것인지 의문스러울 정도로...
또한 영국의 탐험가 로렌스 오츠는 남극원정 중에 이런 말을 남겼다고 한다. “잠시 밖으로 나갔다 오겠습니다. 시간이 좀 걸릴지도 모르겠습니다.” 동상에 걸린 자신의 다리 때문에 동료들이 속도를 내며 갈 수가 없게 되자 스스로 죽음을 선택하고 나가면서 남긴 말이라고 한다. 그때가 1912년 3월 12일 이다. 죽음을 앞두고 나가면서 던진 이 한마디가 지금도 어렵고 힘든 상황에서도 용기를 잃지 않는 이들에게 소중한 유머의 소중함을 되새겨 준다.
사실, 철학과 유머 모두 우리 삶의 불편한 진실을 들추어내면서 우리들을 자극한다. 차이가
있다면 철학이 좀 더 직접적이고 어려운 반면, 유머는 비유적이고 훨씬 즐겁다는 것이다.
따라서 유머를 통해 철학을 이해할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 철학이 좀 더 실생활에 현실적으로 다가올 수 있다. 낄낄거리고 웃으면서 배우는 철학이 우리 삶의 의미를 되돌아볼 수 있게 한다면, 정말 유쾌하고 의미 있는 일이 아닐까?
“게으른 것은 죄가 아니다. 하지만 자기 자신이 게으르다는 걸 모르는 게 큰 죄다.”라는 명언에도 유머가 있듯이 유머를 이용한 생활의 활력소를 찾아보자.
