東京・新橋のガード下で理容店を営み、戦中、戦後を必死で働き続けてきた一人の女性理容師の残した、珠玉の言葉集。

東京・新橋駅のガード下、わずか６坪の理髪店がある。「バーバーホマレ」。1953年の開店以来、ずっとハサミを握り続けた一人の女性・理容師がいた。加藤寿賀、享年94歳。15歳で理容師修行を始めてから94歳で亡くなるまでハサミを置くことはなく、関東大震災、第2次世界大戦を生き抜き、はたらき続けた彼女の残した、魂の言葉。「自分のために働くとか、夢のために働くなんて、とんでもない。人さまのために働くのです。端を楽させるために働くから、『はたらく』なのです」。

■著者プロフィール：
▽加藤寿賀（かとう すが）
1915（大正4）年、東京・京橋生まれ。関東大震災、東京大空襲を経験。15歳で女学校を自主退学して理髪店で修業。35年に理容師試験に合格。39年結婚、日本橋馬喰町に「バーバー加藤」開店。45年の終戦直後にご主人を亡くして以来、女手ひとつで二人の娘をハサミ一本で育てる。48年に日本橋小伝馬町で共同経営の理容店を開き、53年に新橋駅のガード下で理容店「バーバーホマレ」を開店。多くの常連さんに支えられ、2009年末までハサミを持ち続ける。2010年4月6日、心不全のため亡くなる。享年94歳。
