In American novellas the lively style of narration is combined with the sparkling humor and gentle irony of the author towards the characters. The serious things about them meet the comic; brevity in portrayal is compensated by vibrant and bright features of the characters. Main characters of the stories are often quiet, inconspicuous personalities, the so-called "people of no importance".
