Are you curious about someone's past and want to discover if they have ever been arrested for or convicted of a crime? Criminal histories can help to paint a clearer picture of a person's character and trustworthiness, especially in certain circumstances such as being responsible for your children or personal property. Police records can include arrest records, mug shots, probation records, incarceration information, warrant details, DUIs, convictions of both misdemeanor and felony offenses, and sex offender records.

Information Found in Police Records

Using a variety of public databases, you can discover dates of arrest, dates of incarceration and release, court dates and case dispositions, and any outstanding warrants in someone's name. The specific details about an arrest or other interaction with police that is considered public is deemed so by local and state authorities, so some areas may release more information than others. In addition, many locales consider juvenile records to be private, as well as any records redacted from public view by the responsible judge. However, you will still be able to determine whether your person of interest has ever had any type of interaction with local authorities and police.

Sex offender records are one of the more readily available types of police records. This is because sex crimes are considered especially heinous, and as such, federal laws require sex offenders to always maintain current registrations through public registries or suffer severe consequences. States also often maintain their own sex offender registry, offering information to the public such as a sex offender's address, place of work, specific offenses and current disposition, and a physical description and/or mug shot for identification purposes.

Reasons for Searching Police Records

You may need to search police records to confirm the status of your own records, to ensure accuracy and confirm that when someone checks your background they are obtaining the correct information. Police records are also useful if you want to check whether a newfound loved one or potential mate has been truthful about his or her past. Trusting your personal property to a housesitter, babysitter, gardener or other individual whom is otherwise unknown may also warrant a quick check of police records.

Criminal records are record accounts of all activities to be processed through the criminal justice and law enforcement bureaus; so, a criminal records search is for these public records. Criminal background records are categorized by type and jurisdiction, and held at various jurisdictions to which they pertain, as subject to nature of crime, locale, and other relating factors.
